When you're traveling in your car and you hear the sound of sirens it is challenging sometimes to perceive where the sound is coming from and how you should be reacting to best serve the experts.  The fire engine or ambulance may need to be going down the very street you are on and you need to make well informed  maneuvers in order to assist rather and deter them.

Today's emergency in Haiti is a lot like that.  The death toll is over 200 000 and rising.  The streets are dangerous for aid workers as rioting and looting is always a deadly threat in Haiti and is multiplied in the present circumstances. Some reporters are quite harsh with the criticism of those who professionally assist in these dire circumstances but most times that is due to a short term view of the situation.

Having spent some time in Third World situations I have many strong feelings about what has happened.  I believe the problem is greater than we imagine and I know that it reaches far beyond the shores of impoverished Haiti. So if I may, could I offer some informed advice?

1.  Find a trustworthy way to assist the present tragedy.  The major movers and shakers are great at what they do, find a direct means to offer your support and encourage everyone you know to join you.  11 million dollars was raised in a few short hours just through the texting format of adding a $10 charge to you cell phone bill.  Beware of new websites, facebook pages and fly by night organizations, no matter who they may be attached to.

2.  Decide that these circumstances are unacceptable in our era.  The Third World will always need an inordinate amount of assistance when natural calamities happen.  And they do happen.  And they do happen to everyone.  Unlike some "spiritual" people I do not see an earthquake as God's punishing rod, "it rains on the righteous and the unrighteous."  Plan for rain.  As long as people live in squalor and poverty we will have these situations.  But they do not need to do so.

3.  Join me, and thousands in Brockville, Ontario in the simple prayer, "Lord help us erase the Third World in our lifetime."  We are all joining this Easter Sunday in our respective places of worship to offer this identical prayer.  You could spread this opportunity to your place of worship as well.  I have a simple ad that can be placed in your bulletin or newspaper. Please join us to ask this one request in the season of peace.

4.  Join with me in the belief that, not only do we believe we can erase the Third World, but we can convince 1,000,000 young hearts and minds to believe the same thing.  The answers may not be inside my greyly decorated cranium.  I have been taught my whole life in the reality of the Third World.  What if we taught this generation that is was optional?  What if we told them they could make that tremendous change themselves?

The Bible tells us about the tremendous power of confessing with our mouths and believing in our hearts.  The focus of this energy is our own salvation.  I ask you to expand this energy of belief and confession beyond your own life and home. Begin to say and believe great things about the rest to this world,  There is a young child in Haiti today counting on you changing what you say and what you believe.  Her little life would be changed forever if you would just take the time to do so.
